For the 2010 Spring collection A Bathing Ape (BAPE) has come up with a new camouflage pattern taking inspiration from the leopard. The Leopard Snowboard Jacket uses this new camouflage pattern in the all over print style that is one of the signatures of A Bathing Ape. The snowboard jacket itself is a classic silhouette that has proven to be popular with a velcro front section protecting the zipper underneath. On top of the protective flap is an embroidery that reads A Bathing Ape in bold outline font. Four large pockets are located on the front of the jacket with two on each chest and two on each waist section. Velcro cuffs help to keep the cold out and meshed inner lining keeps sweat off.

A Bathing Ape (BAPE) have produced yet another varsity jacket for the up coming 2010 Spring collection and this model is some what more traditional in aesthetics compared to contemporary styles that are pushed by A Bathing Ape in the past. The colorways are subtle combining black body with red accents or navy body with yellow accents and matching double striped ribbing. On the front left chest is a multi-colored traditional crest like design incorporating BAPE elements and the theme continues at the back with a larger emblem design featuring two apes, crown, shield, ribbon and belt.

On one hand The 51-30 PU takes a more casual approach with the all black watch detailed with orange dial, accents on hands and logos. As the model name suggests, they have not used a metallic band but have gone with PU material in black color giving it a divers watch aesthetic. On the other hand The 51-30 Chrono takes definite inspiration from Sunset with the whole face made in a smooth gradation of orange from top to bottom, accented with black dials. This is a new colorway that uses a black upper countered by hints of citrus on the lining and Jumpman on the sole, making this a simple expression of the silhouette. I can already smell 2010's freshness strutting it's way around the corner and every other blogger on the block has made an end of the year list. I feel obligated to put something together. So I did. But it's not your typical best-of list. Everyone knows Drake slaughtered '09, all music critics and their little sisters loved the Animal Collective album, and both Phoenix and Passion Pit juiced up their fanbase with two of the most solid albums of the year. We've covered that pretty substantially and you don't (shouldn't) need P&P to confirm it by putting their names above a bunch of other musicians'.

This list will go over some of the acts that killed it in '09 and didn't get the 4 foot trophy to show off. Here is some great music you might have missed. In no order, these are some of the most underrated acts of 2009.

Miike Snow

Miike Snow is singer Andrew Wyatt and production duo known as Bloodshy and Avant. They released their self-titled album in the middle of 2009 and it got some love and blog hype, but this is the kind of album that wipes its ass with most of the best-of-the-year lists. "Animal" is without a doubt one of my favorite songs of the year. Nothing beats Swedish pop done right, and the production on this album is top notch.

Theophilus London

By the end of 2010, I'll be surprised if you don't know how to pronounce Theophilus. He started the year with This Charming Mixtape, a wildly eclectic project grabbing influence from all the corners of a busy music room and ended with "Humdrum Town", his most accessible, polished song to date. Theo spits with an intelligent passion and does so over beats that never sound like the last 20 rap songs you just listened to.

The White Panda

Mash-up masters. This duo came with an incredible stream of mashes that never failed to make heads move. By combining extremely mainstream elements with sometimes obscure indie and electronic sounds, they managed to make slightly ironic bangers that appeal to everyone. (Except maybe hippies. But statisticians have predicted that hippies will be extinct by July of 2010.)

Who says that white guys with glasses and suits don't have soul? I swear, you could sneak some of his songs into a 1960's classic R&B mix and no one would raise an eyebrow. I'm convinced that the only reason A Strange Arrangement didn't make it onto more 2009 best-of lists is because people didn't know it was new.

Chiddy Bang

Chiddy Bang has built up some strong momentum in 2009, but it's been done in a unique way for a hip-hop blog. By sampling Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, and Passion Pit, Chiddy Bang was embraced by the indie rock and pop blogs long before hip-hop sites started giving them love. It's a testament to how universal their sound is. It's definitely hip-hop, but their mixtape The Swelly Express has something to offer everybody.

J.Cole

I wasn't sure if J.Cole belonged on this list. He's not really underrated, because most people put him up there as one of the top up and coming emcees and label The Warm Up as one of the mixtapes of the year. The thing is, he was featured on The Blueprint 3 and a lot of people I talk to (who don't frequent hip-hop blogs) still have absolutely no idea who he is.

Little Dragon

I got hooked when I heard "Blinking Pigs", then I got the whole album Machine Dreams. One by one, songs rotated as my go-to tracks. The Swedish group makes electronic pop driven by Yukimi Nagano's whispery vocals and create an interesting brand of pop without all the sugar and bubble gum wrappers.

Free Energy

Free Energy is a 5 piece band from Philly with a knack for crafting pop rock songs with an emphasis on the rock. With a co-sign and a little production help from LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy, these guys are bound for success. Their sound is like classic rock with a whole lot of 2010 sprinkled on top.

Discovery

This is another album that made some noise when it came out, then quickly seemed to disappear from the radar like a lecturer at an ADD clinic. The album, simply titled LP is a collabo album made by members of Ra Ra Riot and Vampire Weekend. It's an extremely colorful, shamelessly simplified electronic pop album that has been described "R&B for hipsters". With choruses this catchy, I don't know how this one slipped through the cracks of some fickle listeners' brains.

DJ Premier x Nike Air Force 1 Low

Today first detailed images of the DJ Premier x Nike Air Force 1 Low have dropped. The sneaker comes as part of the same series as the DJ AM Dunk Hi, that we already presented to you a while ago.

The DJ Premier designed AF1 Low comes in a black, dark green, dark blue colorway with multiple premium materials used on the upper. Several details have been laser engraved onto the upper, including DJ Premier, written over the two heels. The in-sole comes with an all-over design, the outer sole is translucent with a design underneath and the upper also comes with contrasting stitching, matching the colorway of the tongue tag. Furthermore DJ Premier is written on the laces and the lacelocks. Look out for a release soon.

Prevent Your Icy Sole from Yellowing

Our recent purchase of the Air Jordan 11 Space Jams brings up a great opportunity to discuss a vital issue. At one point of your life as a sneakerhead, you have been faced with this dilemma. How do you keep you icy soles from yellowing? Before looking at some potential solutions, let’s first understand the process of how our icy soles get yellow.

Whether you kept them in your closet or wore them vigorously, keeping your soles icy is quite inevitable. Why? Because the yellowing happens due to a process called oxidation. Oxidation is the combination of a substance with oxygen. Sadly, when your icy soles are exposed to oxygen, they turn yellow! How in the world can you prevent them from turning yellow then?

If you wear your shoes, yellowing of the soles can’t be avoided. So, you are going to have to accept that you are NOT going to be wearing these shoes. Now some of you guys are probably thinking: “I just paid $175 for these Space Jams, I am wearing them!”. As a collector, I personally like to buy multiple pairs of my holy grails. In this case, I wear one pair and keep the other pair on ice. But not all of us can afford more than one pair so lets discuss best ways of keep you soles icy as long as possible.

Stay off grass, dirt, gravel and things of the sort. If you are walking with your friends and they take a shortcut via the grass, do yourself a favor and walk around. It’s NOT worth it. Do not wear in the rain! Water is your worst enemy. Water will give you the nice yellow bottom for sure… No rain or snow puddles because moisture and oxygen = yellow soles.

Men's Fall | Winter 2009-2010 Trends & Style Guide

We've gotten many many emails inquiring about the Fall/Winter trends post, we're sorta tardy with it, but hey we have lives-- busy ones at that. Nevertheless, without further ado we present to our stylish/intelligent/fly/super-cool readers... The Official Urban Gentleman 2009-2010 Men's Fall Winter Fashion and Trends.

Conservative Dapper

Being polished, being perfect, being well-groomed-- these are the makings of a conservative man. He gets his haircut every week, he gets his shoes shined, he opens the door for a lady, he knows to undo the lower button on his 2-button suit jacket when sitting down, and to just as quickly button it up as he stands. This, is the man that women dream of.

Editors notes: There has been so many colors, so many styles, so many... well, there is just so much going on with men's fashion these days. You have guys bringing back the eye-catching hairstyles, the cross colors, the bright plaids, and much more. So this, Conservative Dapper, is like a break, a relaxing break from it all. It's a return to simpler, easier, classic times. This is my favorite trend for the fall and winter.

To get the look: Trench coats, suits, crisp white button downs, tip-clips, white pocket squares, perfectly polished lace-ups.

Hard Studded

Hard times call for drastic measures. Some people are recession proofing their lives literally, while others are taking the figurative route. This means roughing up the wardrobe, showing the world that "you got this", you're hard and you know it, you're tough and a few troubles really don't phase you.

Editors notes: To me this look is like Pony Boy meets Michael Jackson. You take the main edginess and ruggedness from the guys of the Outsiders and mix it with the jeweled/metallic/shiny/studded MJ from his "Bad era". The late world icon has inspired alot of us this year and this trend is where his inspiration is placed for the fall and winter.

To get the look: Torn/ripped/worn jeans, leather jackets, studded everything- shirts, shoes, accessories, jackets, white t-shirts.

Assorted Swank

The men of the world are pleased with the fashions they have been dealt over the past year or so; therefore many of them have decided to just combine what they have learned. They mix their military jackets with their nerdish glasses, they combine their college cool tees with their Thom Browne inspired pants and oxford shoes. This season many guys are opting to be fashion connoisseurs, their phrase "we collect fashion, we create style".

Editors notes: I've said it once, I've said it twice, and I'll say it again-- men are lucky. Why? because their trends change so slowly allowing them to revel in trends for quite some time. And more than ever I have seen stylish guys mixing it up quite nicely- Retro Bandstand mixed with Geometric Retro Nerd mixed with Clodhoppers Delight with a little College Cool on the side. It's like whatever is necessary to look fly is what guys are doing... daring to be to different by adding their own spins on the hottest trends. To that I say "touche'."

To get the look: band-jacket, cardigan, loafers, glasses, graphic tees, harem pants, torn jeans.

It's a Man's World

As Men's.Style.com stated "enough with the skinny shit". I think we're all tired in some way or another of going out and seeing grown men in girl jeans, v-necks so low we can see their belly-buttons. We know there was a call for androgynous looks last year and men wanted to express their feminine side, but some people took it too far and now we have to re-instate manhood.

So that means get inspired by the manliest men you know then get either rugged or classic. Think Ocean's 13-- Rusty, Danny, Rueban, Basher, and the whole crew- all men, all masculine, all stylish, but in their own way. We're not saying be cookie-cutter models of gq men, but we do want you to "man up".

Editors Notes: "Ahhh (pleasant sigh of relief)" I feel like I just drank a nice tasty soda pop after being parched for an hour... well not literally, but that's the feeling I get when I think about this trend- it's just refreshing. Starting from this summer we saw all the men in Hollywood roughing it on the beaches- letting their beards grow in, chest hairs grow out. They were indirectly telling the world- it's time to be men again, so let's continue this trend for the fall. (I was going to make this apart of the summer trends and I did touch on it a bit in some posts, but I knew it would be better placed in Fall/Winter.)

To get the look: dark denim, perfectly fitted suits, ties, elegant and serious fedoras (none of that funny colorful ish), wing-tips, boots, blazers.

The Avatar Movies....Obvious Racism?????

Disclaimer: This may be an uncomfortable article for those sensitive or oblivious on issues of race and reality. In that case, you may not want to continue reading.

Okay, so last night I was coaxed into seeing James Cameron's Avatar. Why coaxed, well because I never planned to see it, for some reason or another the movie never interested me, but my friend had an extra ticket and wanted to go with someone. I watched the movie at an imax theater, so I must say it looked absolutely amazing. But let me get to the meat of why I'm making this random posting. Well, I hate to have to go here, but, okay how can I put this in a "PC" way.... the movie Avatar by James Cameron, has "twisted diversity" (you guys can interpret that how you want). Nah, I think that doesn't give the proper gist of what I'm trying to say, Avatar has "backwards/ignorant diversity" which made the movie completely wack in my opinion (and that's putting it mildly).

Avatar consists of "humans" and "aliens/natives". The native people, as you can see from the movie trailer, are blue. I guess the movie is placed sometime in the far future because the humans are very advanced. What riddled me though, was the fact that all the natives were african-american, hispanic, or native-american... and when I say all I mean ALL. While on the opposite end all of the humans, all of whom were scientist or in the army, were european-american (aka caucasion). And that, that was extremely perplexing. I caught on to this about 30 or so minutes into the movie when the main native girl Netyiri, played by Zoe Saldana, brought the main human Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, to see all the other natives. I honestly don't want to drag this on and on, but let's just ask the obvious questions-- James Cameron, are you seriously telling me you couldn't have any main human characters be african-american, asian, hispanic, etc? a main asian scientist? you couldn't have a main african-american army guy? or vice versa? You couldn't have one european-american native/alien? Are you really telling me these things?

Okay, now if I had to play devil's advocate I'd say well, maybe it is okay that the natives were people of african or native-american/indian type descent, because typically the people being called "natives" in a country are. Places like Africa, South America (pre it being called America), and North America (mainly the US, pre it being called America, pre 1492) are all places that are extremely wealthy and rich in resources. The people originally from these places had no need to "search for resources" because they had it all. When you are wealthy and have all the natural resources anyone could ever need or want, for food, clothing, medicine, jewelry etc (ie. the many crops, animals, minerals such as gold, etc) you don't need to take from other people. So in some sense, maybe this was okay...

Oh yeah, except for the fact that these were people on a different planet, lol, so do the "natives" on all planets look the same? in terms of facial features and speech, with the same accents/cadences? According to James Cameron, they do. Why could not the aliens/natives include people of all races, James? Then to analyze the humans... for the humans, who were obviously Americans, modern Americans at that (I don't know what year it was supposed to be, but let's just say the year 2500), for it to be the year 2,500 and there not be a diverse cast of scientist and army people was quite perplexing.

But that isn't even the cake-topper, for me, the cake topper was the fact that the "savior" of the native people was of course one of the humans. AND he gets the girl, who was technically supposed to be "betrothed" to one of the main native men. Now don't get me wrong Sam Worthington is hot, but could they not have gotten a mixed person to play his role just so that we can stop with the overwhelming cliches'? Is Zoe S. the Pocahontas, and is Sam W. the John Smith? This movie is full I mean FULL of cliches.... and that's why this movie is extremely sub-par. Why would a 2009 movie (almost 2010 movie), directed/produced/etc by this major person, James Cameron, be so cliche?! Now I am finally able to get what that South Park episode, Dancing with the Smurfs, was doing; I understand why they were making fun of Avatar so much. If you haven't seen that episode watch it here. (They basically compare Avatar to Dancing with the Wolves and other cliche' movies, while integrating the clouded douche-like mindsets of people like Glenn Beck into the plot through Cartman.)

The movie offered excellent graphics especially in 3D, it looked great at the imax theater, but I left feeling bad for the overwhelming ignorance of the people who cast the movie. But idk, maybe I'm missing something.

Now, lets move on...

Avatar: The Last Airbender is my ISH (that's a watered down way to say "shit" btw, lol). Yeah, I may technically be a young adult now, but still Avatar: The Last Airbender, is MY show! lol. It's probably the best thing on Nickelodeon and the best non-comedy cartoon out these days; I seriously love that show. So when I saw the preview for it earlier this year I was extremely happy.

Now you may ask, why am I bringing up Avatar: The Last Airbender? Well because on my google search to find out if other people shared my opinion on the "backwards diversity" of the blue Avatar, I discovered some mind-boggling information about the real Avatar movie, MY Avatar. What did I discover? I discovered the cast. The cast of a movie so OBVIOUSLY set in Asia. All the traditions, the actions, the everything, EVERYTHING on Avatar: The Last Airbender is Asian. From their wisdom, skills in martial arts, to the tea houses, to well, let's see, hmmm, oh yeah THE SETTING!?! Lol, yes the setting for pete's sake, is in Asia. But somehow, someway M. Knight Shyamalan and his casting crew, were not able to find one, not ONE, asian person to play one of the main characters in an Asian movie, lmao. I'm sorry, but that's total BS. And not only are none of the actors initially chosen to star in the movie Asian, but the main character Aang is being played by an undiscovered non-asian kid from Texas.

Many of the actors in this movie are virtual unknowns in one sense or another, so why could not they have used their willingness to cast unknowns as an opportunity to increase the number of asian-american actors? They could have atleast used more racially-ambiguous actors (basically mixed people or perhaps pacific-islanders) to star in the roles. The only main character they got right was sort of unintentional. Prince Zuko, a character on Avatar, was supposed be played by Jesse McCartney, but the movie conflicted with his tour dates so he had to pull out. They replaced him with british actor Dev Patel (the main guy from Slumdog Millionaire), this of course was a huge relief. There are other indian people playing minor roles in the movie, but the overall lack of asian or atleast racially-ambiguous actors is a slap in the face to any competent person.

Dev Patel is the only one that favors his character. They just gave everyone else the hairstyle of the character they are playing which makes them look slightly similar, but still far from the tv show character. Simply put, the casting for Avatar: The Last Airbender was horrible.

I often find that people who feel they belong to the "majority" group in a country are often oblivious to these things. They don't think twice about diversity, and I guess one could rhetorically ask, "why would they need to?" Well how about because it's 2009, we're more conscious as a human race, and we can do better because we know better. But James Cameron and his casting directors only cast european-americans in the human roles and only cast african-americans, hispanics, and native-americans in the alien roles. M. Knight Shyamalan and and his casting directors cast no asians in a culturally Asian movie, giving us direct flashbacks to movies like Cleopatra (I love Liz Taylor as much as the next person, but Egyptian people during the times of Cleopatra were brown). It's okay for a director to change the intended ethnicity of a character, it really is, but it should not be done at the expense of an entire culture. And it makes more sense to do it for a race of people that are under-represented in Hollywood, so that includes people of color (african-americans), asian-americans, native americans, etc.

Were these directors and hollywood casting agents being racist when they picked the actors for these two movies? who knows. I only put the word "racism" in the title post for emphasis and effect, but it does make you wonder what the logic and intent of these directors were. Were they just oblivious? Unaware? Or was it intentional? Did they feel the need to perpetuate stereotypes or appeal to the "majority" of Americans? I for one am positive that people would have watched Avatar: The Last Airbender if the characters were all asian, if not more people. They certainly lost my ticket, support, and enthusiasm, and from what I have read from others around the internet they've lost alot of support and have lowered the moral of avid Avatar fans. I didn't pay to go see Cameron's Avatar, a friend gave me a free ticket, but for anyone struggling with whether or not to go see it... don't. It looks great in 3d, but the movie honestly is not THAT good and extremely cliche' (save your money).

Now, I know this is sorta off-topic, but entertainment topics (and politics) are brought up here and there, and when I see bullsh*t I have to speak up. This may also be irrelevant to many of you, and that's cool, just ignore this post, and come back tomorrow, lol. But for those of you who read this post and know anything about either movie feel free to share your opinions, your observations, or your thoughts on either Avatar movie. Note: I know for many of you just seeing the word "racism" brings out a defensive attitude, causing you to not be as objective. You may want to just say, "no diversity, lmao" and then you'll continue with a 2-4 paragraph rant on how you're sick and tired of these conspiracy theories about Hollywood not being diverse, but just take a deep breath and try to see these points from various perspectives. No one's mad here, a little sarcastic? sure why not, lol, but I'm not calling this racism, just simply posing the question... Again, let me repeat for those easily offended-- I used the word racism b/c it just brings more attention to the topic.

UPDATE: Wow, I didn't know how many people were boycotting Avatar: The Last Airbender, pretty cool in my opinion. There's a site called Race Bending that is organizing the boycott and trying to shed light on the lack of color in Hollywood. They not only discuss The Last Airbender, but the constant discrimination at places such as Paramount studios (displayed in movies such as Transformers), among many other interesting topics. Depending on how open your mind is and how culturally diverse you are on a personal level, you may or may not be able to understand the website, but it's worth checking out.
